Nexus 7 買った | I bought a Nexus 7

Nexus 7 を昨年末に買った。それ以来愛用しているが、とても満足している。長生きはするものだ。

Nexus 7 は Google 社が Asus 社と共同で作った 7インチタブレットだ。そのサイズはアップル社の iPad(9.7インチ)に比べると小さい。

私は新たなテクノロジーにとても驚いている。私はそれまでタブレット端末もスマートフォンも使ったことがなかったからかもしれない。

私がこれほどタブレットを快適に感じているその主な理由は、そのサイズだ。7インチタブレットは持ち運びに便利でどこでも使えるがしかし、携帯電話のように小さすぎて使いづらいということもない。

非常に高機能なので、よく言われるように、このタブレットはラップトップにある程度とって代われるほどだ。Nexus 7 を Bluetoothキーボードとともに使うことは、言ってみれば、ミニミニラップトップを使っているようなものだ。それでいて、ラップトップより経済的で 携帯性に優れている。

I bought a Nexus 7 at the end of the last year.  Since then I have been using it habitually. I am very satisfied with the device.

Nexus 7 is a 7-inch tablet made by Google in collaboration with Asus. Its size is smaller than 9.7 inch Apple iPad.

I am amazed at the new technology. It may be because I had never used a tablet or a smartphone until I bought the gadget.

The main reason why I feel so comfortable to use the gadget is because of its size. 7-inch tablet is easy to carry about, so I can use it anywhere. But it is not too small to use like cell phone.

It is so functional that as is often said, the tablet can substitute for laptop to some degree. Nexus7 with a bluetooth keyboard is, so to say, a mini mini laptop. And it is more economical and portable than laptop.

太ってきた | I am gaining weight

最近、急に太ってきた。お腹が出てきていると感じている。ショックだ、痩せたい。

私のBMIは、さほど高くはない。BMI判定サイトで計算したところによると、私のBMIは普通の水準だそうだ。日本人は痩せているにもかかわらず減量にやたら熱心な傾向があるが、私もその例外ではないのかもしれない。だが、つい1～2年ほど前には、私のBMIは痩せ型に該当する水準だった。

なぜ太ったのか、その理由は私にも正確には分からない。だが、おそらく年齢的なものだろうと見ている。「中年とは、お腹（middle）のあたりが出始める頃のこと」（Middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle）とボブ・ホープは言った。私はまだ中年には早いが、若者とは言えなくなってきているのだろう。

体重を減らしたい。だが聞くところによると、女性の中には男性の膨らんだお腹が好きという人もいるそうだ。痩せるべきか、決心がつかないでいる。

I am gaining weight rapidly. My waistline seems to be expanding. I want to lose weight.

My BMI is not so high. According to a BMI calculator site, my BMI is in normal range. Japanese people tend to be obsessed with weight loss despite their trim waistlines. I may be no exception. But about one or two years ago, my BMI was in underweight range.

I do not know exactly why I put on weight, but I guess the culprit of my expanding waistline is aging. "Middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle," Bob hope said. Although I have not reached middle age yet, I become older.

I want to be slim. But from what I heard, some Japanese women love men's expanding waistline. So, I hesitate to lose weight.

ブログが流行り出したとき、ブログはメインストリームのメディアを脅かす存在になるかもしれないと話す有識者がいた。私も、ブログによる市民ジャーナリズムの拡大は報道の在り方に大きな一石を投じるかもしれないと思っていた。

だがその後、海外ではそのメインストリームのメディア、特に新聞社のウェブサイト自身がブログを始めてしまった。なんじゃそりゃーと思ったものだ。

不思議なことに、日本のメインストリームメディアがブログをしているのをあまり見たことがない。ブログをしているところといえば、Japan Times といった英語メディアであったり、Reuters や Wall Street Journal など海外メディアの日本語版だったりする。なぜなのだろうか。

[Blogging by mainstream media]

When blogging became popular, some people said blogging might threaten mainstream media. I also thought the rise of citizen journalism and blogging might change the way news was reported.

But after that some western mainstream media, especially newspaper websites, launched blogs on their websites. I did not even think journalists from mainstream media also write blogs.

Curiously, I have rarely seen blogs by Japanese mainstream media. Although I know three blogs on Japan by mainstream media, two of them are Japanese version of western media, such as Reuters and Wall Street Journal. Another one is Japan Times, a Japanese mainstream media but written in English. I do not know why.

[Amazon.co.jp で予約注文]

二週間ほど前、Amazon.co.jp で、ある商品1つを初めて予約注文した。 同時に、もう1つ、別の発売中の商品を通常の注文をした。発送方法は、「準備ができた商品から順に発送」ではなく、「できるだけ商品をまとめて発送」を選択した。

ところが、商品はまとめて発送されず、既に発売中の商品から先に発送された。このとき、予約注文した商品はまだ発売前だった。こういうものなのだろうか。

いずれにせよ、後に注文したときのために役立つよう、今回のことをブログに記しておこう。

[私のはかなき記憶力]

だんだん記憶力が悪くなっている。10代の頃からもともと記憶力が悪かったが、ここにきてますますひどくなっている。

まず、簡単に物忘れをする。例えば、初対面の人の名前を覚えるのに難儀している。齢をとったということなのかもしれない。このため、近頃では、初対面の人の名は、後でメモをとるようにしている。

また、自分の過去の人生をはっきり思い出せなくなってきた。これは恐ろしい。過去の記憶を失うことは、自分のアイデンティティを一部無くすことになると思うからだ。

[Pre-order from Amazon.co.jp]

About two weeks ago, I pre-ordered a product from Amazon.co.jp for the first time. At the same time I ordered another product that was on sale. Finishing orders, I chose "group my items into as few shipments as possible" not "I want my items faster. Ship them as soon as they become available (at additional cost)."

But the products were not shipped together. Amazon.co.jp first shipped only the product that was on sale before the other new product was released.

I do not know Amazon.co.jp's shipping policy well. So, I will write this experience down in this blog for the future.

[My fragile memory]

My memory has been getting worse. Even as a teenager, I had a short memory. Now, my memory is awful.

I easily forget things. For example, I have trouble remembering new people's names after I meet them for the first time. I may get old. So, recently I have made a habit of writing their names down afterwards.

To make matters worse, I cannot recall the past clearly. It is terrifying because, to my mind, losing my memory is equivalent to lose a part of my identity.
